What is vaping?
Everything that you ever wanted to know about vaping!
Quite simply, vaping is the act of using an electronic device such as an e-cigarette to heat a liquid, known as e-liquid or vape liquid, into a vapour to deliver nicotine efficiently into the body through inhaling.
Is vaping safe?
Vaping was first introduced successfully in 2003 as an effective and safer alternative to smoking by removing lethal chemicals present in cigarette smoke.
Did you know there are 250 known poisonous chemicals in cigarette smoke? These include hydrogen, cyanide, carbon monoxide and ammonia, just a few of the most lethal chemicals inhaled when smoking. By omitting these chemicals, vaping is considered a safer alternative to smoking. The PHE (Public Health England) has stated that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking, while four out of 10 ex-smokers and smokers wrongly believe that nicotine is the cause of most smoking-related cancers. The fact is, evidence has shown that nicotine poses minimal risk to health. Nicotine is highly addictive and the primary cause why smokers find it difficult to quit. Vaping allows ex-smokers to gradually reduce their dependence on nicotine without the harmful effects of smoking. Vaping, unlike smoking, lets you control the amount of nicotine consumed, making it an effective means to quit.
Does vaping work?
As an alternative to smoking, recent trials funded by the U.K NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) suggested that as an alternative to smoking, vaping has proved to be twice as effective as other nicotine replacement therapies at helping smokers who wish to quit. The study aimed to see how many people would abstain from smoking for one year using a typical vape device and 18mg of nicotine-based e-liquids compared to the other nicotine replacement therapies. Of the group studied, 18% of the people vaping compared to less than 10% of the other groups gave up smoking for the twelve months. Currently, it is estimated, nearly 2.6 million people in the U.K now use e-cigarettes.
Is vaping for me?
Since its introduction, vaping has become increasingly popular. Vaping devices, also known as e-cigarettes, have become safer and easier to use. Research has also shown that vaping is the most effective aid to quitting smoking, with a success rate twice as high as other nicotine replacement therapies.
There is now a wide selection of vape 'starter' kits aimed directly at first-time vapers, from puff bars, also known as disposable vapes, to All-In-One (AIO) vapes and vape pod kits.
Since its introduction into the U.K in 2005, the e-cigarette or vape pen has come a long way and is one of the most popular vape devices for new vapers. With a rechargeable battery capable of lasting all day, and a 2Ml e-liquid tank or pod with a vape coil designed for MTL (Mouth-To-Lung) vaping, combined with a simple single click or draw activation, the vape pen has changed the way people view vaping. MTL vape pens are designed to mimic cigarettes, providing a familiar feel and experience, making them a perfect gateway to vaping.

What is TPD?
As a direct result of the many vaping related deaths reported in the U.S, caused by cheap vape products and unregulated vape liquids, the U.K government, with advice from various health bodies, decided to regulate the use and manufacture of vaping products, including e-liquids. First introduced in 2001, the TPD (Tobacco Products Directive) set out to regulate e-cigarettes as consumer products in 2014.
These new regulations restricted E-cigarettes to a maximum 2Ml tank capacity, and the sale of e-liquids were limited to a volume of 10Ml if they contained nicotine. Nicotine content was also regulated and could not exceed 20Mg in strength. That is why e-liquids are sold as 10Ml TPD E-liquids. Since its first introduction, the TPD has continued to regulate the sale and use of vape devices and vape liquids in the U.K, ensuring their quality and safety.
The U.K has also seen many leading independent vape businesses come together to form organisations like the IBVTA (Independent British Vape Traders Association) and the UKVIA (U.K Vape Industry Association). They work closely with the government, regulatory agencies, and scientific and health bodies to improve vaping products and ensure that vaping is viewed and promoted as a safer alternative to smoking.
