What are vape mods?

Vape mods are devices that can be paired with a vape tank or advanced vape pod to create a vape kit. These mods are powered either by a built in battery or external batteries, giving users flexibility depending on their needs. Vape mods are designed for a more customisable vaping experience, often featuring variable wattage capabilities, allowing you to fine-tune power output for a tailored vaping experience, adjustable wattage, temperature control, and airflow settings. They are usually favoured by experienced vapers who want a more personalised setup. Mod devices deliver more power compared to beginner and intermediate e-cig kits, requiring a knowledge of Ohm’s law to understand resistance versus wattage. More sophisticated mods will automatically adjust voltage or temperature depending on the wattage settings to ensure an optimal vape. Alongside these, some users also prefer mechanical mods, which offer raw, unregulated power but require advanced vaping knowledge to use safely.

Vape Mod FAQs

Features of a vape mod

When choosing a vape mod, compare the different features:

  • Power output (wattage) – Higher wattage mods (100W+) are ideal for sub-ohm vaping, while lower wattage supports MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping.
  • Tank compatibility – Mods often have a 510 connection, enabling them to pair with a wide range of vape tanks. Always check that both the mod and tank have a 510 connection.
  • Battery life – Mods with a built in battery are convenient and easy to recharge, while external or removable batteries can provide more flexibility and longer usage if swapped out. Higher mAh batteries deliver more power for extended vaping sessions.
  • Airflow – Open airflow creates a looser inhale and is best for DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping, while closed airflow gives a tighter draw for MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping.
  • Temperature control – Many modern mods include temperature control mode, allowing you to prevent dry hits and fine-tune flavour by setting a maximum temperature for your coil.

How to set up a vape mod?

  • Install the batteries (if the mod uses external batteries).

  • Attach the vape tank to the mod using the 510 connection.

  • Prime the coil by adding a few drops of vape juice directly to it before inserting it into the tank, then leave it to soak for a few minutes.

  • Adjust your settings by setting the wattage, airflow, and temperature control (if available) to your preference. If the vape mod has a smart mode, it will select the best wattage for the coil.

  • Fill the tank with vape e-liquid.

  • Turn on the vape mod and start vaping.

How long do vape mods last?

Vape mods are designed to last for years if well maintained. If the built in battery or external batteries are functioning properly and no physical damage has occurred, the mod should perform reliably. However, vape coils and tanks need to be replaced more frequently depending on use. If using external batteries, performance can decline over time, and they should be replaced when output weakens.

What is sub-ohm vaping?

Sub-ohm refers to coils with a resistance below 1.0 Ohm. Sub-ohm vaping allows for higher power, resulting in larger vapour clouds and enhanced flavour. Vape mods, especially high-wattage or mechanical mods, are popular with sub-ohm vapers because of their ability to deliver intense vapour production, making them ideal for cloud chasing and DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping. Built-in safety features are particularly important when using sub-ohm setups to prevent overheating and ensure reliable performance.
