What Causes a Burnt or Dry Hit?

What’s a dry hit?

Dry hits occur when your vaping juice is not igniting correctly.  The coil in your device may be igniting e-liquid too rapidly. As a result, you’ll get a mouthful of hot air, that has an unpleasant taste to say the least.

What does a dry hit taste like?

You’ll know that you’ve experienced a dry hit if you can taste a rancid flavour as you inhale. You’ll notice that these sorts of tastes hit you very suddenly and the intense heat at the back of the throat with likely cause you some throat strain! They're a real pest.

How to avoid a dry hit?

The solutions to this problem are simple. Changing the VG/PG ratio of your e-liquid may help. It takes longer for a coil to become flooded with a high VG ratio vape juice because it has a thicker consistency than PG. Doubling back to an e-liquid with a higher PG percentage is an easy fix, and ensures that coils are never fully dried out, which could lead to a nasty burnt hit.  If you find this doesn’t help, priming your coil properly can prevent your coils from burning out prematurely. Just make sure you fully fill the pod with your favourite e-liquid and leave the new coil to soak for around 10 minutes before use.

What’s the difference between a dry hit and a burnt hit?

With a dry hit, you’ll get less flavour and exhale less vapour without the sharp, ghastly taste and coughing that will come from a scorched hit. A dry hit will be the prerequisite to a burnt hit, so it’s best to change things out before it’s too late!

What’s a burnt hit?

Burnt hits can occur when the wattage of your device is too high for your coil head, when you have no e-liquid in your device, or when you don’t have enough e-liquid soaked into your coil. Your e-liquid will evaporate too quickly as a result and when this happens, the wick can't re-saturate quickly enough, so the coil ends up burning the wick. This will cause a putrid burnt taste.

What does a burnt hit taste like?

You’ll get a mouthful of the smoke caused by the scum and gunk on your coil being heated off. This will be a horrid experience, and you’ll likely gag and may even vomit because the taste is so vile. This is no joke, and the taste may throw off your whole appetite and ruin your day. We advise that if this happens you drink some cold water and take some time off from vaping until you feel fine again.

Are burnt hits dangerous?

These burnt hits are likely not dangerous health-wise by any means. They will be extremely sickening but will likely cause no long-term health problems for you. You may experience headaches if you vape a burnt coil continuously, but, some basic paracetamol will help you with these. Just ensure you stop and replace the coils!
