CHOOSING THE RIGHT E-LIQUID

Choosing the right e-liquid can be quite an overwhelming decision because there are just so many out there! You might be new to vaping, or you may already have a go-to flavour that you love.

Whether you’re an advanced vape kit user, or you’re new to vaping, you should always keep rotating your e-liquids.

But let's break down the basics before we really get started...

WHAT IS AN E-LIQUID?

E-liquid is a fluid that is heated up in an e-cigarette device. This heated fluid is turned into a water-based (smoke free) vapour that helps combat nicotine cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms and replace cigarettes.

Vape juice itself is typically made up of four ingredients; propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and nicotine (if desired.)

PG/VG

Before we start to break down flavourings, it's important to break down VG/PG ratios too and why knowledge about them is essential! Every e-liquid is made of 2 base ingredients: vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). The ratio of these ingredients can change depending on the desired outcome however the most common blends are 50/50 and 70/30.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene Glycol or PG is the provider of flavour in e-liquid, it is nearly odourless and carries a faintly sweet taste. As we've said, it's a core ingredient in e-liquid, PG can also be found in foods, medicines and many other products to keep them moist. There are some who are sensitive or allergic to propylene glycol. If you start to feel unwell, it's recommended that you switch to a higher VG e-liquid, if the reaction is more severe then stop altogether. PG delivers a stronger throat hit than VG but can cause your mouth and throat to become dry with excessive use.

Vegetable Glycerine

Vegetable Glycerine or VG is a smoothing ingredient that gives a more tangible and satisfying vaping experience. The VG thickens the e-liquid mixture, which makes high VG e-liquid more suitable for larger sub-ohm devices. VG is an odourless substance that is subtly sweet in taste. Similar to PG, VG is used elsewhere, particularly in the food industry as a sweetener and to also keep foods moist. It can also be found in many herbal and cosmetic products and medicines. No health problems have been linked to the use of vegetable glycerine.

DECIDING ON A FLAVOUR

Embracing Fantastic Flavours!

If you constantly vape one flavour, you’re highly susceptible to what’s effectively referred to as vape mouth. This refers to the sensation which plagues users who eventually find they can no longer taste the flavour of their favourite e-liquid, nic salt e-liquid or DIY e-liquid. This can be circumvented by simply not vaping for an extended period. However, because nicotine is a highly addictive substance, this is always easier said than done. As a result, it’s a great idea to understand the characteristics of flavour profiles and the importance of continuously rotating your e-liquids (and flavour concentrates) so you don’t get fed up with how they can influence your vape experience.

Tobacco

These are great gateway flavours that can get you accustomed to vaping so it makes sense to talk about these first. When you quit smoking, you'll likely miss things about it that you didn't even realise were important to you. For many heavy smokers, the taste of tobacco is secondary to the feelings of nicotine, but as soon as they're deprived of the tart taste and smoky aroma, they find they want it more than ever. There is an abundance of flavours out there, and it's just a matter of continuously trying before you're able to find an e-liquid that's just like your favourite cig brand!

Sweet

If you’re partial to the sweeter things in life, that’s great! There are hundreds of e-liquid flavours out there that are sure to please most sweetie lovers and fans of candied treats. You’ll be able to find some of your favourite baked goods, sweet candies, elegant desserts and refreshing sodas. It’s super important to remember however that just because something tastes good initially, won’t eventually grow sickly over an extended period. This should be a significant consideration especially when you have an initial love for a particular ‘real’ treat. Everyone’s worst nightmare is when something that was initially great, becomes unappealing over time because of overexposure. So, what we recommend, if you’re all about the sweeter flavours, is to keep them in a cyclical loop, of at least three flavours and we advise you to change them frequently. A system of one flavour a week works great, or you can just keep switching out bottles as they empty themselves.

Mint/menthol/ice

Today, most people use mint/menthol flavours in their toothpaste and have mint lozenges as palette cleansers for their refreshing qualities. Before they were rightly made illegal throughout the majority of the world, menthol additives in their heyday harnessed a lot of power in the nicotine industry.

Vaping has been able to intertwine both of these narratives and deliver you the ability to wean away from the prevalent dangers of tobacco while you enjoy the invigorating tastes of mint and menthol.  This is a hugely popular additive in vaping because it’s a great palette cleanser that largely works to circumvent vape mouth. This is also a huge complimentary flavour to almost any other flavour too, so we recommend you give it a go.

Coffee/bitters

Coffee is one of the most popular ways to start the day. It's a delicious beverage with a great range of flavour notes that can not only wake you up, but turn your whole day around too! The sweetly bitter combination we all know and love translates well into vape form, so we recommend that you try to pick some up. Bitter-flavoured vapes are a great choice for vapes too.  They can be a little bit difficult to get into at first, but after some time vaping them continuously, you'll be able to appreciate the unique zingy they can bring to your day! Plus they can pair well with lots of other flavours too.

Fruity/berry

Fruit and berry flavourings are far and away the most popular additives that are prevalent in the industry. Fruits and berries have some of the most flavour range, so it's no surprise that this would contribute to the most popular vape flavour category out there. You'll have the choice of sweet or sour, juicy or zingy, refreshing or mellowing. This is an obvious one that we unequivocally recommend you check out, and if you'd prefer to try before you buy, you'll be able to find some fruit flavours across any vape proprietor across the nation.

E-liquid flavours are subjective and taking/giving recommendations can be tough, we suggest testing a few out, finding your flavour and going from there.

NICOTINE STRENGTH

So, you’ve chosen your flavour, and now it’s time to choose your nicotine strength.

You can choose nicotine salts, which are a type of e-liquid that have a high nicotine strength that help those who consume a moderate number of cigarettes a day and produce some seriously awesome clouds of vapour. They're a great vape liquid choice and you won't be stuck for choice when picking an e-liquid flavour either.

You can identify nicotine strengths within e-liquid when you see ‘mg’ next to a number. This refers to the strength, or nicotine content within that specific bottle and is designed to match the nicotine intake in their current habit or taste. An easy way to choose your nicotine strength is from the number of cigarettes you smoke daily. Most typical e-liquids will balance between 3mg and 18mg, whereas nic salts will typically be between 10mg and 20mg in strength.

Number of cigarettes a day Suggested Strength
0-5 3mg
5-15 6mg
15-20 12mg
20+ 18mg
